As a child, I clearly remember my mom combing my hair, and feeling a sudden surge of pain run through my scalp once she found a knot.
Ugh! It was the worst.
Now that I’m older, I still find myself having to gently pull at my ends to get rid of these blooming knots.
Well not anymore. I’m over hurting myself all in the name of beauty. I started to implement these simple tricks that have made all the difference, and if you want to rid yourself of pesky tangles-I suggest you start following these rules as well.
Rule #1 Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize!
You should be moisturizing your hair at least twice a day. Hair that is moisturized is less likely to have knots. Remember, hair oil isn’t moisturizer. When you’re looking for a hair moisturizer it should contain a lot of natural products. So remember to read the labels. Rule #2 Wear Protective Hair Styles
Wearing protective hair styles is self explanatory. If you do this, you’re not allowing your hair to coil up on its own and possibly knot up at the ends. Braids, kinky twists and two strand twists are a great protective styles. For those ladies who wash -n-go, its either rock the ‘fro and deal with the knots later, or you can get rid of the knots all together? I say go with the later choice.
Rule # 3 Protect your hair while asleep
For women who wrap their hair at night, this isn’t anything new. For women who wear their hair in a fro, this might be an adjustment. If you wear a silk or satin bonnet or scarf at night, it lessens the chances of when you toss and turn, you cause knots in your hair. Keeping your hair braided at night will also help to minimize tangles and save you some major time detangling when you’re getting ready in the morning.
Rule #4 Do thorough, but gentle detangling
Use a fine tooth comb on your ends after detangling your tresses with a wide tooth comb. If you can’t seem to find either, a Denman bush would work, or your fingers are just as good. You should know this by now, but always start at the ends and work your way up the root of your hair with whatever styling tool you’re using. Detangling your hair should be done with care. Sectioning your hair and combing through your hair section by section is always advised.
Rule #5 Deep Condition your hair or use deep treatments

Rule #6 Oil Rinse
This idea might be new to some, or some might not have known what the proper term for it was. Oil rinsing is when you oil your conditioned hair while it’s wet. Why does this work? By doing this it makes your hair easier to detangle and of course, avoid knots, which is what we’re all about.
Rule #7 Stay away from towels and anything cotton
By using cotton towels on your hair, it causes your hair to snag and causes split ends. Now, if you use a cotton towel once, it won’t cause a lot of damage, but if this is a regular habit of yours this could be the cause why your hair has knots at the ends.
Rule #8 Keep your hands out of your hair.
Once your hair is dry, styled and finished keep your hands out of it. Yes, playing with our hair can be something we do unintentionally, but it causes knots. This is something that you’re going to have to stop if you don’t want knots.
Rule #9 Keep it trimmed
It’s always a good idea to treat your hair to a good trim every two to three months because your ends can become dried and frayed, which makes your tresses ripe for knots. Trimming your ends can make combing your hair easier, and can improve hair growth. Some naturals even report that cutting off 1-2”of their relaxed ends helped their natural hair to grow faster.
Rule #10 Shampoo less cleanse more
When it comes to knots, our shampoo can be one of the main culprits. Commercial shampoos contain harsh detergents, which are going to strip your hair of the natural oils and leave it feeling dry, brittle and proned to tangles. The Solution is easy. Option 1. Start using an all natural shampoo with no sulfates.
Now ladies, a lot of the things on the list are things you already know or learned while transitioning to your natural hair. However, you should try to incorporate all of these tips into your hair regime if you want to reduce one-strand knots and increase smooth healthy hair. It’s just that simple.
